- 2
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- 3
Add sliced onions and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25–35 minutes.
- 4
If using, add sugar to help with browning.
- 5
Once deep golden, add balsamic vinegar and cook 1–2 minutes more.
- 6
Keep warm.
- 7
Make the Burger Patties
- 8
In a bowl, gently combine ground beef with garlic, parsley, thyme, Worcestershire, Dijon, salt, pepper, and onion powder.
- 9
Form into 4 patties (don’t overpack or the burgers will be dense).
- 10
Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
- 11
Cook the Burgers
- 12
Skillet: Heat the pan over medium-high. Add butter for extra richness. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese in the last minute and cover to melt.
- 13
Grill: Grill 3–4 minutes per side over medium-high heat. Melt cheese during the last minute.
- 14
Toast the Buns
- 15
Spread a little butter on the buns and toast in the skillet or on the grill until golden.
- 16
Assemble
- 17
Spread garlic aioli or mayo on the buns.
- 18
Add lettuce or tomato if using.
- 19
Place the burger patty on the bun.
- 20
Top generously with caramelized onions.
- 21
Finish with the top bun and enjoy!
